Unaccompanied Minors travelling with Malév
Your child is always in good hands when travelling unaccompanied with Malév.
Our airline will take responsibility for your child right from the moment of collection to the time our escort delivers him/her to a parent/guardian or other escort at the appointed airport. Don't forget though, arranging matters for an unaccompanied minor (UM) at the airport takes extra time, so please make sure you arrive with your child for check-in at least 90 minutes before the flight leaves.
As a matter of commonsense safety, please tell the ticketing agent if the child suffers from any medical condition. If your unaccompanied minor is leaving from an airport other than Budapest you can still buy the ticket in Budapest and pay for the fare abroad in one of Malév's local offices, at a Malév agency or a general sales agency.
If a minor is accompanied to the flight by a person not bearing the same family name, in order to avoid any misunderstanding it is important that this person is able to provide credible proof that he/she is the parent or legal guardian of the minor, or that the child is travelling with the knowledge and permission of the parent. Certification (e.g. a statement witnessed by a notary public, birth certificate, personal identity card, student card etc.) is required in instances where a child is travelling together with a parent bearing a different family name as well as when the child is travelling unaccompanied. Such certification must be shown to the ticketing agent at the time of booking by the parent of the child or an adult companion. Without this certification, we are unable to issue a ticket for the child.
At airports
Your child is accompanied by an airline employee right from the time of checking in at the airport to arrival at the destination and the moment when he/she is handed over to the designated person, so you can be sure your child is always safe.
On board the aircraft
The chief purser on board the aircraft keeps a close eye on unaccompanied minors during the flight. If you decide you want your child to be accompanied by a flight attendant, it is the exclusive duty of this escort to take care of the child. When making the booking you should tell the ticketing agent if your child would like a kid's menu during the flight. We also give out games, puzzles and toys to all children. Please note that unaccompanied minors may not be seated in the emergency exit rows.
Charges
Parents must pay all costs associated with their children's travel. The following charges refer to flights operated by Malév only (valid from 27 March 2005).
- Infants aged between 0-2 years may not travel on Malév flights as unaccompanied minors, not even when escorted by a flight attendant.
- Children aged between 2-5 years may only travel on Malév flights when escorted by a flight attendant, for which service a charge is levied.
- Children aged between 5-12 years may travel independently, for which service a charge is levied. This charge does not cover the cost of a flight attendant, but does include the additional attention and care the child receives from flight and airport staff. The charge ("UM charge") is the child fare + €25/segment. Of course, if you want to have a separate flight attendant to look after your child aged 5-12 years, you will have to pay for an escort air ticket too.
- Children aged over 12 years and under 16 years may travel independently, although a flight attendant may be requested to escort them throughout the flight and at the airport. If you do not want a flight attendant for your child but would like our air and ground staff to keep a close watch on them, the UM charge is an adult fare + €35/segment. Without payment of the charge the child is not entitled to this special service.
The UM charge should be paid when the ticket is issued at the airport, ticket office or travel agency. The UM charge only applies to tickets booked and issued after 27 March 2005.
Children's meal
When it's time to board, there are lots of exciting experiences in store on the journey. A tasty, healthy children's meal can be ordered when reserving seats. At the same time, there is an opportunity for children aged four and older to travel - accompanied by a Malév companion - without parents. Our flight attendants help to make travel with children relaxing.
Malév hasn't forgotten the tots, either. Cots can be ordered when buying tickets for our long-haul flights, and nappy changing facilities are available in the toilets on nearly all flights.
